Ceysson & Bénétière Tokyo

For Ceysson & Bénétière’s first Asian gallery, located in Tokyo’s prestigious Ginza district, Sophie Dries imagines a space that moves away from the conventional white cube to offer a more atmospheric and sensory experience of contemporary art.

Drawing on her deep sensitivity to material, gesture and context, Dries creates a minimalist interior inspired by the wabi-sabi spirit and the poetic depth of Junichiro Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows. Across the 325-square-meter gallery, raw and natural materials — iroko wood, corten steel, solid wood, metal and handcrafted ceramics — establish a refined dialogue between French and Japanese traditions.

Every detail reflects Sophie Dries’s commitment to craftsmanship and material expression. Custom-made pieces, including the Croissant sofa, Songye tables, Météor rugs, Glow chandeliers and kintsugi-restored ceramics, contribute to an immersive environment where art, architecture and design coexist with quiet intensity.

Through this project, Sophie Dries transforms the gallery into more than an exhibition space: a place of contemplation, precision and discovery, shaped by the meeting of heritage, contemporary creation and Japanese artisanal purity.
